Florence Service Processing Center

Florence Service Processing Center picture

About our facility

The Florence facility was originally built to serve as a World War II internment camp for enemy soldiers. It was utilized in this capacity from 1942 until 1948, when it was converted to a detention center for first time offenders. In 1983, the legacy Immigration and Naturalization Service acquired the facility. Over the past two decades, the Florence Service Processing Center has undergone gradual expansion. Presently, the facility houses a rapidly changing population of up to 650 detainees from over 40 countries.

Meet our staff and see what we do

Florence is unique among Division of Immigration Health Services (DIHS) sites. It is the only facility to incorporate a staging facility and service processing center within a single locale. Our busy ambulatory care clinic delivers primary care services to roughly 20,000 individuals each year. We are a dynamic facility staffed by an energetic team of Public Health Service officers and contract employees. Our ambulatory clinic and four-bed Tuberculosis Isolation Facility (TIF) operate 24 hours per day. Services include medical and mental health screening, management and surveillance of communicable diseases, acute and chronic care services, dental evaluation and treatment, and mental health crisis intervention.

The Florence staff truly embraces the team approach. We work together via our local governing board to monitor and improve clinic processes. Inclusion, integrity, innovation and excellence are among the values which guide the Florence team.

Our Location

Both visitors and residents alike are drawn to Florence's year-round sunshine. Originally an Old West mining town, Florence is situated in Pinal County, midway between Phoenix and Tucson. Its location allows for easy access to Arizona's two largest cities, as well as to many suburban communities, including Tempe, Gold Canyon, Chandler, Casa Grande, Gilbert, Mesa, Marana and Oro Valley.

As the fifth oldest town in the state, downtown Florence has been designated an official "Historic District." Florence truly prizes its rich history and boasts more buildings on the National Historic Register than any other Arizona town.

Places to go, People to see

Phoenix has one of the fastest-growing job and housing markets in the nation. Mild winters and a relatively low cost of living have fueled much of this growth. Metro Phoenix offers an endless array of sports, recreational, cultural, and dining selections. In addition, the region is home to unparalleled natural wonders, including majestic mountain ranges, tranquil desert sunsets, cool pine forests, and massive canyon lakes. You can enjoy mountain biking along world-class trails, find solitude hiking in the region's expansive nature preserves or play a round of golf on some of the best courses the world has to offer. Within a half-day's drive, you can explore the wonders of the Grand Canyon, hit the slopes for winter skiing or bask on the shores of a Baja beach.

In addition to its numerous natural attractions, the Phoenix area offers abundant opportunities for sports fans. The Phoenix-Tucson area is home to the Phoenix Suns (basketball), the Arizona Diamondbacks (baseball), the Phoenix Cardinals (football), and the Phoenix Coyotes (hockey).

Two major universities and several nationally recognized community colleges are located in the area. The Kyrene school district, ranked within the top 10% among Arizona schools, is a short 1/2 hour drive from the Florence facility.
