About our facility

The Krome Service Processing Center (SPC) was established in response to "Freedom Flotilla" from Cuba, which brought 124,769 Cubans to the shores of Florida. The Krome Medical Referral Center (KMRC) first opened in 1981 in support of the legacy Immigration and Naturalization Service's (INS) objective to protect the health of the American public.

The detention center is a consolidated camp housing detainees from all over the world. Construction has been ongoing to add new dormitories, a new immigration processing and administration building, as well as a new 30-bed medical facility which will include six respiratory isolation rooms.

Meet our staff and see what we do

The medical staff at Krome is committed to working together with the now Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to carry out the mission of protect America by providing health care and public health services in support of immigration law enforcement. Also, the clinic is fully accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), and the American Correctional Association (ACA).

The Krome medical team is recognized as leaders in their field. Two Public Health Service (PHS) officers were called upon to provide medical escort duties for Elian Gonzalez on April 22, 2000 when he was reunited with his father. They received the heart-felt thanks of Juan Miguel Gonzalez, INS Commissioner Doris Meissner, and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Donna Shalala for a job well done!

Full ambulatory healthcare services are provided Monday through Friday. Nursing staff is on duty 24 hours per day, seven days per week to medically screen new arrivals, provide primary care and respond to emergencies. An average of 200 detainees are seen in the clinic daily for sick call, physical exams, laboratory procedures, medication administration, and management of chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and hypertension.

Teleradiology service was recently added, enabling detainees to be screened by chest radiography for active Tuberculosis within four hours! The facility also operates a 17-bed short stay unit which includes two respiratory isolation rooms. Detainees requiring a level of care not available on site are referred to a local healthcare facility.
