Varick Service Processing Center
The New York Service Processing Center (SPC) is located in historic Greenwich Village in downtown Manhattan. It occupies the fourth floor of a large, 12-story federal building and is a medium-security detention center.
The medical facility opened in 1988, for the purpose of housing detained migrants, who originate from various countries, including the Dominican Republic and other
Caribbean islands. However, many come to the facility from New York State prisons, and city and county jails.
The New York SPC shines so brightly thanks to a highly committed and capable staff of seven Public Health Service (PHS) officers, one civil service, and six contract employees. The medical staff screen detainees for infectious diseases, coordinate and provide for quality medical care, respond to on-site medical emergencies, and serve on international escort missions, thereby enhancing the mission of the Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE). The clinic is operational 24 hours a day, year round, and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the National Commission on
Correctional Health Care (NCCHC). It will be surveyed for accreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA) in 2001.
The medical
facility's location in Greenwich Village is the heart of New York City, home to some of the
world's best restaurants, shopping, nightclubs, theatre, sporting events, and sites. If you are interested in a quiet lifestyle, areas of Long Island, NY and New Jersey are a quick and inexpensive commute, easily accessible by public transportation. New York enjoys the diversity of all four seasons, from the brilliant colors of the changing leaves in Autumn, to the magic snow of Winter, the renewed promise of Spring and the steamy nights of Summer.
The New York Service Processing Center is a stellar example of the kind of dedicated, committed and hardworking employees that serve the Division of Immigration Health Services.
