Dentist

DIHS has a position opening for a Dentist to provide a full range of direct dental services to INS detainees located in one or more SPCs and/or contract detention centers throughout the US. Additionally the incumbent will provide dental consultation to the DIHS as requested.

Duties and Responsibilites:

  • Conducts a program of primary dental care with responsibility for examination, diagnosis and treatment of patients.
  • Provides dental treatment and advice to patients as indicated. Secures case history and related pertinent information. Examines patients, utilizes diagnostic equipment as appropriate, interpreting results for diagnosis; establish diagnose(s) and performs necessary treatment, carrying out such follow-up treatment as may be indicated. Refers patients with conditions/treatments which are beyond scope of the on-site intermediary level infirmary to an appropriate off-site dental facility for care or refers for consultation to dental, surgical or other adjunct services those patients the dentist is not qualified to treat or for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment procedures.
  • Prescribes and/or dispenses required medication to patients.
  • Seeks advice and consultation as required.
  • Provides professional dental supervision to the assigned staff of assisting dentist.
  • Directs and participates in preventive dental health programs.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance program.
  • Serve as a resource advisor to DIHS staff on dental health.

FACTOR 1, Knowledge:

Incumbent must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Graduation with a degree of Doctor of Dentistry from a US or Canadian school as approved by the recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation;
  • Posses a Doctor of Dentistry, or equivalent degree, from a foreign dental school that provided education and knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the US. In addition to the above, the applicant must have two years of recent licensed work experience as a practicing dentist and hold and maintain a current unrestricted license to practice dentistry in the state in which the position is located.

FACTOR 2, Supervisory Controls:

Works independently without day to day supervision.

FACTOR 3, Guidelines:

Guidelines for the work of the position are readily available from American Dental Association and Center for Disease Control and Prevention covering dental care and related issues. The incumbent must use professional judgment in interpreting and applying guidelines to a clinical dental situation.

FACTOR 4, Complexity:

The work of the position consists of the broad functions of dentistry: diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and emergency care. Assignment generally involves the simultaneous application of multiple distinct skills, knowledge and abilities in the care of one or more patients.

FACTOR 5, Scope and Effect:

Work affects the health and well being of detainees.

FACTOR 6, Professional Contacts:

Patients are aliens detained by the INS for either illegal entry or those with criminal records. Dentist provides health care services to this population.

FACTOR 7, Purpose of Contacts:

Provide medical services to INS detainees.

FACTOR 8, Physical Demands:

Dentist may be subject to verbal/or physical abuse at the hands of a detained alien. INS or contract guards are on duty in the facility to minimize such occurrences.

FACTOR 9, Work Environment:

Work is performed in the medical section of the medical facility in an INS Service Processing Center for detained undocumented migrants. The work is performed in a medical setting where there is exposure as well as risk associated in work with detained populations having criminal and non-criminal backgrounds.
