The Midway Deployment
August 1999 - October 1999
This deployment was very similar to the Tinian deployment. Although the number of Chinese migrants was only 122 and the medical officers numbered five for the first two weeks and two for the remaining time, the demand and the hardships of establishing a medical unit on a remote island that was a wildlife reserve with 100 permanent inhabitants was challenging. Medical resources were non-existent, the small clinic on the island was barely capable of providing for the needs of the residents. All medical needs had to be dealt with locally, due to the distance between Midway and any other port of call. PHS not only provided the health care to the migrants but also to the ICE personnel running the camp.
