Florence SPCC / Our History

The Florence Public Health Service Clinic in Florence, Arizona serves the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The facility was originally an internment camp for enemy soldiers captured during WWII, with the first prisoners housed in the spring of 1942, the facility included all of the amenities of a military installation. By December 1945 it held a total of 13,000 prisoners, however, by 1946 the facility was classified as "surplus", and ownership was transferred to the state of Arizona in 1948. The facility was utilized by the state until 1966 as a state hospital and detention center for first time offenders. In 1983 the Immigration and Naturalization Center acquired the facility with a bed capacity at that time of 160. In 1988 the capacity was increased to 350 to 400 beds. In April of 2000, the facility again expanded to the present 322 beds for the camp and 187 beds for the FSF (staging facility).
